I can’t even imagine being in a position where my government was telling me to kill my dog, or have it beaten to death. Dog owners in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, are even being told to kill their own dogs, or else their dogs will be beaten to death by the police and the owners will be charged a fine.

I also only managed to see rather common bird species at Shennongjia, a nature reserve in Hubei province, China. Fortunately, some birds like this rather wonderful Chinese Babax family with chicks let me get close enough – and in decent enough light – that smoothening the background was not much of an issue.

China is developing very fast, and Shanghai is developing even faster. The Black-crowned Night Heron is a member of the heron family. It sometimes makes a rather strange croaking noise, a bit as if a dog tries to bark but does not know how to do it properly. This sometimes makes it difficult for wild animals to survive.

A decision not to eat dogs has nothing to do with our inherent hypocrisy, but with our relationship to different animals. Dogs were bred to be companion animals; pigs and cows are raised as food.
