Usually not one to chicken out, the worried and concerned looks on their faces told me not to ignore the advice. We also saw Prairie Dogs , Bison , Mule Deer , Abert’s Squirrel and Coyote. My hosts, obviously knowing their countrymen better than I do, strongly advised me not to get out of the car. I ticked off 9 lifers.

Owls, the debait

One wouldn’t tether a rabbit out to get a shot of a fox or a coyote, or is that somehow different? And as Ron Dudley shows, it goes beyond live mice, as he documented a whole chicken being left out by someone to attract raptors. At least a chicken would last awhile as a feeder.

Some abbreviations are not helpful, however, such as SSHA ( Sharp-shinned Hawk ) or GRPC ( Greater Prairie Chicken ) or UEFL ( Unidentified Empidonax Flycatcher ). Coyote bombs with sizzling wicks, so even at my sleepiest one glance at her chart would snap me into “en garde.”

They strolled around like fierce chickens, too young to know any better. The city’s layout made great and surprising encounters possible as the birds moved from park to park, weaving their way through the streets. In Sutro Heights park the resident Red-tailed Hawks had three fledglings who explored the park on foot.

You can see that they forage much like chickens, eating seeds, leaves, and flowers from grasses, shrubs, and trees as well as insects. In addition to these aerial predators, their eggs and young are often taken by squirrels, gray foxes, house cats, coyotes, gopher snakes, rattlesnakes, raccoons, American Crows and Western Scrub-Jays.

There is also an effort to represent all geographic areas of North America, from Eastern Bluebird (below) to Greater Prairie-Chicken to California Scrub-Jay. This is seen nicely in the chickadee portrait, which shows a Black-capped Chickadee, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, and Mountain Chickadee on the same branch, “inspecting everything.”
