If you thought that migrant traps and spring in south Texas were birdalicious (and they can indeeed be spectacular), how does an ecosystem with 400 and even 500 plus species tickle your birding fancy? This brings us to the first obvious upside of rainforest birding in Costa Rica; a chance at a lot more species than other habitats.

Surely they couldn’t be the same species, across a continent. The Carolina grasshopper Dissosteira carolina ranges from sea to shining sea, into Canada and nearly to the tip of Texas. Cattle Egrets might well get them when they leap out of the way of our domestic replacement bison. But they are.

While we continue to decimate our short and tall grass prairies many species reach their inevitable peril. Here in Colorado many species are affected, but perhaps none more than our beautiful Mountain Plovers and Ferruginous Hawks. The Pawnee National Grasslands continues to be a stronghold for our two species in question.

They contributed 150 lists accounting for 1032 species and more than 36,000 individual birds. They forage, rest, and preen right there on the open, bare ground, for some species, the more open and bare the better, especially so for the “grasspipers” Upland Sandpiper by gary.leavens. When not slicing the air in super quick flight, all are solidly terrestrial.

The warm, sunny climate beckons a wide variety of passerines, raptors, and shorebirds to spend the winter, inflating the species diversity to the extent that Miami-Dade can go toe-to-toe with counties in Texas and Arizona during this season. Can we hit 200 ABA-countable species in four days next year? Cattle Egret: 133.

The Arenal forests are very good for this species. Formerly common, their present scarcity in the country is a reminder of what happens to biodiversity when spectacular rainforest is replaced with cattle pasture. The Texas A and M Soltis Center : I was very pleased that we could once again bird this excellent site.
