India was not on my list of places to go in 2016. So, I birded India, land of Indian Peafowl , Saag Paneer (my favorite Indian dish) and Tigers. Luckily, I didn’t have to look hard to find the Dusky Eagle-Owl’s nest. The species is crepuscular and nocturnal, but can sometimes be seen during the day.

Nowhere in India have I seen broiler horror-chicken like those sold in supermarkets back home. They belong to a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus (like four-legged Greco/Roman crested helmets) and are my second race of boar seen in India, while I still remain the only Serbian birder who has never seen one closer to home!

When a tree filled with nestling Cattle Egrets collapsed, 60 orphans took up temporary residence in the house.

we’re already in an open 4×4 heading for the salt pans of the Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, India. Continuing by the yellow sandstone Hindu temple under construction, than by the large heaps of salt (two thirds of all the salt used in India comes from here) and finally entering the Kutch Biosphere Reserve. But, from the existing data, the authors have drawn a different conclusion – there is no proof that the breeding population ever existed, that the south of Africa was beyond the species range and that that all observations were of vagrant individuals. During my lifetime, this species was rare in my native Serbia, too.
