We remember starlings not skylarks, House Sparrows not Eurasian Tree Sparrows , Cattle Egrets not… well, whatever we’ve forgotten because it didn’t do as well as the Cattle Egrets. Especially of all the species that had been introduced to the US. And after all, some birds have to expand their range sometimes.

There has been one for the last couple winters at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, but I don’t think anyone has gotten as close to it as I got to the one at the Queens Zoo. Mallard Complexity About the Author Corey Corey is a New Yorker who has lived most of his life upstate but has spent the last three years in Queens. Wicked, right?

In the time we spent on Culebra I saw 49 species of birds, not bad for an island outside of the wintering grounds for most neotropical migrants and only measuring eleven miles square. I can’t imagine the damage they must inflict upon the native wildlife. I spotted eight species in my time on Culebra.
