Choosing to adopt a dog rather than get one at the pet store (or what some like to refer to as “puppy mill”) is a beautiful thing—essentially you are saving a poor pup from euthanasia and you’re providing a an animal with a good home. But adopting a pet is a huge responsibility and is very similar to adopting a child.

His gagging fits – like a cat trying in vain to cough-up a hairball – are becoming more frequent. And when she did have time for Hamlet, Emmie cried and pleaded with her mom to take him to the vet. As if the vet had a cure for old age. I would take him to my house that evening since the Vet was closed. “I got it.”

Years ago, I became a wildlife volunteer and advocate because of a cat who caught a bird. Now, he lay frightened and ruffled in my hands, his tail tattered, his feathers damp from the maw of a cat named Puck. Back then, I didn’t know enough about birds, but I knew a lot about cats. I scrambled for a box.
