The Hawaiian Crows face much more destructive threats–extreme loss of habitat; malaria, the scourge of so many Hawaiian species; predators–rodents, cats and the ‘Io, the Hawaiian Hawk. This is the most intense, tragic section. As I watched their transcendent flights, I felt my own heart quicken.

When these birds breed, this can lead to highly cringeworthy announcements, for example from Adelaide Zoo : “We have egg-citing news!” ” Of course, as a certified cat person, I was delighted to see a Green Catbird near Brisbane. It seems that quite a few zoos keep Tawny Frogmouths.

Some of these islands cannot be reached by any mode of transport except a long ocean crossing and some are well over a thousand miles from the closest human habitation. Its numbers are declining rapidly due to feral cats and this duck is currently listed as vulnerable. That leaves us with the world’s islands.
