May Migration in Queens

My spring has been pretty amazing so far with 146 species spotted since April 1 and Cerulean , Worm-eating , and Yellow-throated Warblers and a host of other species spotted before May even arrived, but the first couple of days in May have been even better. Queens, New York, May 2009 May is the month of migration in North America.

On the Edge.

Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear. One of the most common species on our trip, the charming, and striking, Black Guillemot. Trips Arctic Canada' Still, with that many bear you have to stay vigilant.

The husks of box elder seeds littered the ground, neatly stripped and devoured. Wood Stork and White Pelican. Orchard Oriole and Prothonotary Warbler.

Yes, around the same number of people live within two hours of the national park as in all of Canada. Indeed, during my short time spent at the park, I have encountered all there is to get below Air Panas, with the exception of maybe two to three species (the laughingthrush and the hanging-parrot and maybe something else I have forgotten).

Thank a lemming

Where I live, there are two species of lemmings, the Brown Lemming ( Lemmus trimucronatus ) and the Collared Lemming ( Dicrostonyx groenlandicus ). Lemmings can have four or five litters a year of as many eight young. A Collared Lemming on a Beat Writer’s hand.

Another effect of the bounty of lemmings is other prey species enjoyed a bit of a respite from their position at the bottom of the food chain. Apparently without fidelity to a specific mate, although pairs will soon move off and establish, and defend, their own territory to raise their litter.
