This chapter also covers vagrancy in social migrants, and why vagrancy is common in ‘obligate social navigators’ like geese and cranes, a thought which got me thinking of all the times I’ve searched for one Barnacle Goose amidst hundreds of Canada Geese. Next time, I’ll know why. It’s not always easy reading.

Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Giving a few hundred hunters something else to shoot, in my opinion, cannot be worth the blowback from tens of thousands of people who are willing to travel and spend just to watch the birds fly over.
