Growing Meat vs. Going Vegetarian

Animal Ethics

Every day, some people switch from meat-based diets to vegetarian diets. But then again, it could be due to the fact that we are constantly bombarded with billion-dollar advertising campaigns from the meat industries, the dairy industry, and the egg industry, as well as from myriad restaurant chains that promote and sell these very animal products. Consider, e.g., the traditional low animal-protein diets in rural China and the vegetarian diets of 15 million Jains.)

Hal Herzog's "Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat"

Animal Person

When Staci, an ex-vegetarian who now eats raw meat, writes to Herzog that she thinks it takes bravery to kill animals (she says “butcher) and talks about “reverence” and “completing the cycle” and that “taking responsibility is somehow the balm that soothes the horror,” I wonder why Herzog isn’t disgusted by that and doesn’t want to call her out for her ridiculous verbiage that means nothing to the animals she kills. The campaign to moralize meat has largely been a failure.

On the Psychological Continuum

Animal Person

There is a general consensus that vegetarianism and veganism are different philosophically. There is no philosophical continuum, but there is a psychological continuum, as evidenced by everyone at the workshop taking steps back or forward, denoting their increase in animal use (including no meat to meat, or backsliding, like I did a decade ago), or their decrease (such as when vegetarians go vegan). The campaign should not demand huge changes in society.

On the Vegan "Diet"

Animal Person

When I first saw PCRM's " Kickstart Your Health With a Vegan Diet " campaign, I let out a bit of a sigh. If PCRM can get more people to try a "vegan diet" for 21 days as suggested, which is what in my experience used to be called "strict vegetarianism" (and which is no better), that's an actual decrease in animal use for those people. And if this campaign increases the number of people who decrease their animal usage in their diets, that's a great step.

On Being a Minority Within a Minority

Animal Person

Of course there are oodles of vegetarians who mention veganism and how difficult and restricting it is, and overall I'm having a fairly disheartening experience. In other words, vegans who don't support PeTA and don't campaign for larger cages are alien to most of the non-vegan world and even much of the vegan world.

Animal Ethics

Hello, We've recently launched a new website, the PB&J Campaign. It takes a slightly different take on vegetarian advocacy—trying to quantify the effects of single meal decisions to protect the environment and improve animal welfare. At this point we're emailing websites and blogs that have related themes, our goal being to get the word out that the site exists. Please let me know if you have any questions about it. Cheers, Bernard Brown

The tiresome Hitler was a well-known vegetarian comment is included in this segment, but I found it irksome long before that. If Engber does a good job with anything, it's with pointing out the flaws in the strategies of pro-animal activists and in the outcomes of their campaigns.

Are Farm Animals Usually Killed in a Humane Manner?

Critter News

In my opinion, and I am a vegetarian, the second definition of humane is the MINIMAL that we should expect. Livestock don’t contribute to campaigns, but agribusiness does. Andrew from Good Honest Dollar had an excellent question. He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. It's a thoughtful question I wish more people would ask.

A shift toward more vegetarian options would indeed benefit us all. Paul Shapiro Senior Director Factory Farming Campaign Humane Society of the United States Washington, Nov. To the Editor: Re “ The Protein Pyramid ” (editorial, Nov. 10): Thank you for pointing out the unsustainability of the so-called protein pyramid. But there is a net loss in all meat production, not just of farmed fish or feeding fish to land animals being raised for food.
