Twenty years ago, flocks consisting of a thousand European Turtle Doves were a common sight in Serbia in spring. As we speak, in Serbia these birds are still hunted in August and September. Since this spring’s revision of the European Red List, the Turtle Dove is listed as a vulnerable species.

Birding Beljarica in August

Last month, I birded my favourite local patch, Beljarica – the best eBird hotspot in Belgrade city and the 3rd best in Serbia – four times. Also, a European Roller and a Turtle Dove made their appearances, too. but because this large spillway protects the city from flooding. Photo: Gordan Pomorisac. And I felt… relieved?

Still, the ease of restrictions allowed me to escape some of the elections campaign torture through the media and exchange it for the soothing sensation of being in a deep and damp conifer forests in the rain. I don’t think so. Forest bathing? Bird therapy?
