Last year not a single chick survived and there is much predation of both eggs and young birds along the length of beach. The first pair of Pied Oystercatchers to lay eggs this year was the same as last year. The first egg laid is not necessarily the first to hatch and often there is a day in between when they hatch.

The stunning head plumes of the Gray Crowned-Crane make it attractive to bird collectors and zoos; illegal collecting of wild birds is one of the reasons why this species is now considered Endangered. This plain used to be little affected by humans, being grazed by just a few cattle, goats and camels.

They usually have their first eggs in place by the first week in July each year and they sit on them for 28 days. The first egg is laid followed by the second the next day and then they sit fairly continuously despite the warm day time temperature. On rare occasions we have had three eggs in a nest, but this is unusual in this area.
