Birders know that some of the finest birding locations in the country are on federal land , which include national parks , wildlife refuges , forests , monuments , and seashores , among others. The eleven largest national wildlife refuges are also in Alaska, including Arctic NWR and Yukon Delta NWR , each more than 19 million acres.

There are more than 550 national wildlife refuges in the United States, with at least one in every state and one within an hour drive of almost every major American city. Others were established to protect specific bird species or subspecies. But they primary protect land, an essential but dwindling avian resource.

Because these lands include a variety of different habitats and range from Alaska to Puerto Rico and Hawaii to Maine, it is difficult to make generalizations about their impact on birds. Channel Islands NP , also in California, supports most of the other 50%. The target birds tend to be similar.

This time I’ll be working with Wildlife ACT in Zululand, helping that NGO monitor wildlife in a range of reserves and parks in the east of South Africa. I bring this up not to boast (well, not much) but because I think that this approach to wildlife travel is somewhat neglected in birding circles.

Soon we were out of the protected harbour and into choppier waters, and here I have to say I suffered for about two hours from the dreaded affliction known as sea-sickness. We soon were close to the Mokohinau Islands , one of the many islands in the area that serve as wildlife refuges. Though it is certainly bad news that the U.S.

They are commonest where they are intensively protected and managed, but these places are often remote and hard to visit. Seeing a wild kiwi is potentially the highlight of a star-strewn birding visit to New Zealand, but please respect the tenuous situation the five species are in and any measures in place for their protection.
