Oh, to be birding at Shark Bay in Australia. What season are we in right now? Corey will be getting up into the counties north of NYC on Saturday looking for breeding birds and in Queens on Sunday. Conditions vary wherever you are, but take comfort in the fact that birds hang around whatever the season. How about you?

On the breeding grounds of the north, a small bird flies into the night, takes a bearing for the south, gains altitude and flies onward. They don’t need to be professional bird killers either, predators only need to be in the right place at the right time. Migrant birds make an incredibly perilous journey, twice per year.

Unexpected, sudden moments of excitement came in the form of a few leaping Thresher Sharks (!), Also known as the Fairy Tern, this species breeds on Cocos Island and is very rarely seen from pelagic trips in Costa Rica. a couple sea turtles, and a jumping sailfish but no birds. Were there going to be any birds?

Carpet Shark washed up Carpet shark being returned to the sea I hope you have enjoyed this little insight into our varied wildlife here in the north of Australia. She also monitors Pied Oystercatchers breeding along a 23km stretch of beach by bicycle and on foot. Wicked, right? Hat-tip to Stella.

In particular the South Island destination of Kaikoura is world-renowned for the flocks of albatrosses and giant petrels floating right off the pelagic boat, and the ease of the trip makes it a must-visit for any visiting birder. Wicked, right? One birder from Australia even got his lifer Red-crowned Parakeet ! Hat-tip to Stella.
