The breeding and wintering birds of Britain and Ireland. A few years ago I helped with the BTO’s Turtle Dove Survey.

A Little Win

This email was flagging up the activities of a ‘sporting agency’ in Britain who were offering trips/holidays to Morocco to shoot Turtle Doves. Further research revealed two more companies in Britain and several others across Europe all engaged in the same shooting tourism.

Cable Beach Pied Oystercatchers

A few weeks ago I introduced you to the first pair of Pied Oystercatchers to start to breed this year. It also protects nesting turtles, which nest later in the year. The vehicle access is closed around the biggest high tides when the turtles are nesting to protect them and their nest sites. There are good reasons for this rule.

Back to the beach!

Walking north I soon encountered a fresh Flatback Turtle nest from the previous night’s high tide and that should hatch out in about 2 months all going well. The nests have been monitored for some years now so there is now some baseline data on how often the Flatback Turtles nest on Cable Beach and how successful they are.

Birding Deliblato Sands: What I have seen and what I haven’t

They do not build nests, but occupy old nests of Rooks and breed colonially among them. Red-footed Falcon’s breeding range starts less than 50 mi north of here and I hope that some will choose to join a local rookery and stay. A pair of European Turtle Doves on a wire, followed by two soaring Common Buzzards ….

Birding Shanghai in November 2022

Hopefully, the winter time in Shanghai gives the Black-faced Buntings some time to relax from the challenges of the breeding season. In contrast, the females need to make sure not to get duped into raising actual cuckoos – the buntings are a targeted host species ( source ). No wonder no species are named after me.
