May is also a good time for herons and egrets, as they are in their full breeding plumage. Little Ringed Plovers are fiercely protective of their cute chicks. A Tiger Shrike – as always – looks very stylish. Lesser Coucal breeds in Nanhui, coastal Shanghai. Chinese Pond Heron. Great Egret.

But the stars of the month were some breeding Eurasian Tree Sparrows. But indeed they vanish somewhere once the people pretending to try and catch fish appear. Even though they probably do not need to be afraid of the competition.

They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). Apparently, when breeding, the two parents divide incubation duties, with one bird taking over the daytime duties and another one the nighttime. Lucky him, right?
