As a breed, pit bulls have a bad rap. However, they are more vulnerable to being forced into fighting than other breeds. Aside from the breed’s abuses, one finds that adopting out this breed is highly difficult. Given these dogs’ poor disposition, what should you do if you find a pit pull?

BSL (Breed-Specific Legislation) is the canine equivalent of racial profiling, banning certain dog breeds that have been labeled “dangerous.” Focusing on the breeds, instead of putting the blame where it belongs — on the individual dogs and their irresponsible owners — is discrimination in no uncertain terms.

To the Editor: Re “ States Try to Weigh Safety With Dog Owners’ Rights ” (news article, July 23): Any law that deems a dog as dangerous or vicious based on appearance, breed or phenotype is unfair and discriminatory. It seems to me that discrimination against pit bulls and Rottweilers is eminently justified.

In One Good Dog , my imaginary pit bull, Chance, comes from a deeply disturbing situation and finds himself having to learn a new ‘trade,’ that of pet. The work of shelters and breed rescue organizations is vital. It already has me drawn in!
