Another danger to the species comes from lead poisoning as they eat the carcasses of deer killed by hunters ( source ). The eagles do not breed on Hokkaido, spending only a few winter months there – so if you want to see courtship displays as described in here , you have to go further North a bit later in the year.

Finally in 1799, the first visitors on this volcanic land were a group of French seal hunters who were after the fur seals that can be found hauled out on the beaches for fur and oil, which almost wiped out the local population of the species. About half of all breeding Wandering Albatross nest on the Prince Edward Islands.

Oil begins to wash up on the beaches throughout May and June of 2010 May 6, 2010 Oil washes ashore on the Chandeleur Islands off the Louisiana coast, an important nesting and breeding area for many bird species. Government officials estimate that thousands of them are badly sealed.

Towards the end of their breeding season the islands become a somewhat melancholy place as the visits by adults dwindle and then stop, and the youngsters fledge off into the vast expanse of ocean around the island. But beyond these two species the rest of the petrels are supposed to feed excluisively at sea. And the hole looks fairly fresh.

The latter is even captured in a somewhat gruesome video , in which the hornbill plucks a caged bird out of its cage and kills and eats it. At 15h59, the female picked up the fourth chick and killed it by repeatedly crushing it with her beak. One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars.
