Fall is the transition season, and for a while I used to be the transition guy, linking up the crazy summer seabird season on the Farallon Islands with the slightly more laid back fall landbird and shark season there. The gulls that spent months attacking any human on the place are content to loaf around and ignore you.

Its amazing to me that there are still places on earth where wildlife is blissfully unafraid of humans. It was made a National Park in the 1980s and is a major breeding and nesting area for over 30,000 seabirds. Swimming with a whale shark on the boat-trip to Isla Isabel. Red-billed Tropicbirds nest on these craggy cliffs.

Today, there are more than 3,000 birds at this accessible colony and they are protected by fences and stiff fines for human disturbance. The only other significant mainland breeding colony is based about an hour out of Cape Town on the east coast at a place called Betty’s Bay.

The bird “spent five months on Mindoro Island in the Philippines during the non-breeding season and migrated through Taiwan, the Chinese east coast, and the Korean peninsula” and on to the Russian Far East (indicating a certain lack of solidarity with Ukraine). This is not really an option at Nanhui though.

In addition to sharks, barracuda, rays, and fishes, we had also spotted Double-crested Cormorants , Brown Pelicans , and Magnificent Frigatebirds. Their populations have grown about 5% every year since 1966 , and their global breeding population is now larger than 120,000 birds. Still, they are sensitive to human disturbance.

Penguins are flightless, but some species locomote over long distances on antarctic ice to travel between breeding grounds and the sea. And, they wear tuxedos, which seem to provide camouflage while they are swimming, where leopard seals, sharks, and other creatures would like to make a meal of them.
