There has been growth in the breeding population at the colonies in Morocco (now estimated at 106 breeding pairs and approximately 500 birds in total).

There are three things that will go wrong: 1) The inland zones that would become the new wetlands are already, in many cases, occupied by human-built things that will severely interfere with this process. Also, these human-occupied area are probably full of toxins and other impediments to normal use by wildlife. And penguins.

White-tailed Lapwing by Jochen Roeder Duncan made a surprising choice: While the twitchers might have gone with the lost Emperor Penguin that washed up in June , my heart belongs to another. This year I watched them from the day they arrived , until two chicks successfully hatched, the northernmost breeding record for the species.

Not to mention, its brilliantly bulbous crimson throat, bloated during breeding season must be a sight! However, the Stresemann’s Bristlefront is one of those birds that is simply enigmatic and rare and recently discovered, with many aspects of its life history unknown to humanity. and would love to watch Rockhopper Penguins.

I was involved in the study of human movement and navigation on land, and there was a lot of research coming out about bird navigation. A fascinating exception to this, of course, are penguins.

Last month woodpeckers, this month penguins. None fly, most are curious and social, which probably contributes to our cultural perception of penguins as one step away from human.
