Though breeding grounds for neotropical migrants get the bulk of attention in North America wintering grounds are just as critical, and any news about land being preserved as wintering habitat for the Cerulean Warbler is wonderful. He lives in Forest Hills with Daisy, their son, Desmond Shearwater, and their two indoor cats, Hunter and B.B.

They breed across Canada and Alaska’s boreal forest near ponds and lakes, using nest holes made by woodpeckers, almost exclusively flickers. Hes only been birding since 2005 but has garnered a respectable life list by birding whenever he wasnt working as a union representative or spending time with his family. Beautiful.

The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! Why is that awesome?

But the Golden-cheeked Woodpecker (in this case, a female) is a strictly Hot Country species, replaced by the closely-related Golden-fronted Woodpecker up where we live. And breeding season allows me to notice certain details that I might miss during the rest of the year. But this was the first time he flew directly overhead.

Breeding pairs sometimes are supported by helpers, but these are not quite as unselfish as it may seem – in one study , in 8.3% These photos were taken in early March – the species looks more attractive in its summer breeding plumage.
