Garganey in New York

On Sunday, 5 June, word of Jay McGowan finding a Gargeney at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in western New York State hit the listservs. I’d only ever seen Garganey once before, way back in 2009 in Kazakhstan. The little tiny duck with the white supercilium was ours! But I included a Wood Duck for scale!

Felonious Jive really likes a ravishing returning rarity – a Falcated Duck. This bird spent the 2011-2012 winter at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in northern California, migrated someplace exotic and distant in February, and returned to the same pond at the beginning of this month.
