Garganey in New York

I’d only ever seen Garganey once before, way back in 2009 in Kazakhstan. The little tiny duck with the white supercilium was ours! Anthony had spotted the bird back in the reeds and announced it only to see a Wood Duck swim out. But I included a Wood Duck for scale! What if we missed it? Yeah, the bird was distant.

The year 2016 was not a particularly birdy year for me, mostly because I didn’t get to go on business trips to Indonesia or Kazakhstan, as was frequently the case during the last few years. Lesser Spotted Eagles breed regularly with around 100 pairs in Germany, but unless you know where the territories are you are unlikely to see them.

Felonious Jive really likes a ravishing returning rarity – a Falcated Duck. Falcated Duck by Felonious Jive Duncan Wright had some pretty good birds to choose from for his Best Bird of the Year. Secretive, silent and undetectable outside of its breeding season, found only in the U.S. Sound good?
