Species like the Gyrfalcon , the aerial powerhouse of the tundra, of stunning, breeding-plumaged May warblers. In Costa Rica, lately, I have been enjoying the class and elegance of bird poster art produced by CaraCara. These are all of the toucan species that occur in Costa Rica.

It takes a detour to reach Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge in Costa Rica but oh how the trip is worth it. It was a treat to see several wintering members of the esteemed Parulidae family. An uncommon species in Costa Rica, it was in a brushy area that reminded me of its breeding grounds. Wintering Wood-warblers.

Many Neotropical families and genera have some of their northernmost members here, such as the spinetails ( Rufous-breasted Spinetail ), Tangara tanagers ( Azure-rumped Tanager ), and guans ( Horned Guan ).

Think Arizona meets Costa Rica with a Mexican twist. In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. This poorly documented swallow is a breeding endemic to these high mountains.

Its native range stretches from the southern Pacific coast of Mexico south to northwestern Costa Rica, where it is an inhabitant of arid to semihumid woodland and open areas with scattered trees. The young followed the parents around in small family groups well after they had fledged.
