One of the threats to the Blood Pheasant comes from overgrazing by cattle. During incubation, the females typically leave the eggs once per day for a duration of about 7 hours ( source ), during which the temperature of the eggs drops to below 10 degrees Celsius for a few hours.

Sadly, they no longer breed in Algeria, while in Turkey no free-flying birds remain. (In Storks, Ibises and Spoonbills of the World states that “disturbance by local people, tourists, and egg and zoo collectors has similarly reduced the colonies, and more protection is vital”. In 1890 an estimated 3,000 pairs nested in Birecik.)

Although the trains at the Thessaloniki-Alexandroupolis line seem to be few and far in between, they still stop at this village station turned into a restaurant. We also observed nests of Pygmy Cormorants , Dalmatian Pelicans , Little Egrets , Cattle Egret (with a chick), Squacco Heron , and Spoonbills.
