It’s still hard for me to wrap my head around this trip, my first on a brand new continent. In the relatively brief period, my group had something on the order of 450 species. This Red-chested Sunbird was among the most common species we encountered throughout the trip, and one of the most mid-bending.

A Field Guide to the Birds: Giving Field Marks of All Species Found in Eastern North America was published in 1934 by Houghton Mifflin (note–Peterson was 26 years old), after being rejected by four publishers. Adding the 76 new species in the Hawaii section, this makes coverage of approximately 884 species.

This boldness isn’t restricted to exchanges with other grouse, either: in some locales, members of this circumpolar family are astonishingly foolhardy around humans. And, on any other night, that could very well mean grouse is being served, as the Scottish table is famed for the bounty of its abundant fish and game.
