On a second visit I spotted a fishing boat going east along the channel followed by over a hundred gulls and terns, including over 40 Black Terns. As a talked to a couple from Boston, new to birding, I spotted a Clapper Rail walking close behind us. These were winter birds, due to fly north any day. Clapper Rail. Back to the Flats.

Like heroin junkies constantly seeking the perfect high, Seth and I refused to stop birding, stopping at Hempstead Lake State Park where the birding was as bad as this year’s Boston Red Sox so by the time we gave up hope we were discussing the best ways to drown ourselves in one of the park’s ponds.
