In the early days of the “modern” world (meaning since some time after the Enlightenment, or later, depending on what you call “modern”) we did get bird books, but the bird books were all words, no pictures. And in those days there were bird books with pictures in them. Clearly, we need better software.

And, without warblers we would not have the bibliographic joy of books like The Warbler Guide , by Tom Stephenson and Scott Whittle, a warbler feast for the eyes, the answer to the prayers of every birder who has seen a glimpse of yellow, black, and white and said, “If only that leaf wasn’t in the way, I’d know that warbler’s name.”.

All photos were rejected – none of them was considered worth publication in the book accompanying the competition, let alone worth an award. Though carefully removed with photo editing software, it is obvious that the bird in the air has been fixed by a wire. Of course, in retrospect, it is easy to understand why.

I can’t get a good feel for them (I still prefer my book version). A complete guide would have pictures, audio, and video (something like Thayers birding software). With ipods and iphones you can carry a lot more information than multiple books. No need to page through dozens of plates of similar looking species anymore.
