Given that few hunters actually consume coyotes, wolves, cougars, and except for a few individuals, even bears, it is obviously a “waste” of wildlife to shoot or trap these animals just for “fun” 2.

The first twenty-nine pages of the book, after the acknowledgements, table of contents, and other prefatory materials, are devoted to the Pantanal and Cerrado and the need to conserve these two endangered biomes. The one major drawback to this book is actually an intended feature and not a glitch.

For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Even more telling, the support the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission was expecting from its hunting community simply never materialized.

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? Do all hunters realize that? It gives one to wonder why this designation was made.
