This all came back to me as I read Learning the Birds: A Midlife Adventure because author Susan Fox Rogers was one of the two birders to find the Ames Henslow’s Sparrow. It’s the subject of the eleventh essay in this collection, almost smack in the middle of the 22 pieces that comprise the book.

This, 2022, has been a curious year for books about birds and birding. Despite the absence of two major publishers—Lynx and HMH–from the new title publishing scene (hopefully not permanently), we were happily surprised to read and peruse many excellent books. But this is more than a coffee table book. Highly recommended.

The opening beautifully encapsulates the essence of the book. The author, conservation biologist Caroline Fox, is observing the albatross’s shadow to the side of the boat. Fox notes the albatross in her “soaking-wet notebook” and watches it circle and fly back into the masking glare. Do I need to say anything more?

The website then hastens to add that “Unfortunately, there isn’t much scientific research on the poop of the upland buzzard” I bet some ornithology students do not find this particularly unfortunate. Some ornithological research is surprisingly simple.

So, I was very excited when I heard that Rick Wright was writing a book about sparrows, the first treatment of North American sparrows since 2001, possibly the first book about sparrows of North America, depending on your definition of that geographic area. Scope of Book. Read the Introduction!

Now, on to the books. The cover designs, like the parent book, are cheerily colorful; the Eastern guide is green, featuring a photo of a Rose-breasted Grosbeak, the Western guide is blue, featuring a White Pelican just landing onto the water. A detailed index is located at the back of the book, listing scientific and common bird names.
