As you can see from the feature pic, my lousy owl luck precluded me from getting too close to one of these crepuscular hunters. The very handsome bird wasn’t hanging out where expected, but I was lucky enough to spy it chilling (literally) on an ice-encrusted pier, unperturbed by the duck hunters that chased everything else away! If you think it is rather pretentious to start a birding blog post with a Kafka story, I fully agree with you. Anyway, the story is not quite how I remembered it, to be honest, but fitting enough to describe the almost claustrophobic birding experience in ever-shrinking Nanhui. I just want to point out it could be much worse.

Twice in the past 24 hours (once here and once on Stephanie's blog, in the comments )I have come across the following statement: "[insert animal here] are safe from predators, get fed regularly, and are better off on farms than if they were in 'the wild.'" It's not pretty.

Joseph Chiera is a Masters student in Animal Behavior and Conservation at Hunter College in NYC and a “somewhat newbie” to birding. After taking an ornithology course last year, he was hooked and spends most of his free time birding or reading birding blogs. It is truly a magical place, an experience like none other.
