Week 30: We return to Summer Lake

Right, smack dad in the middle of Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge. Hundreds of Black-necked Stilts were around the refuge, this group passed right by me on a short morning walk. There is a 12 mile Wildlife Viewing Loop that can be driven, and is a great way to get a feel for the layout of the refuge. Now that is a first.

Week 31: Visits to Hart Mountain, Malheur and the surrounding areas.

10,000 Birds

Two full days at Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge, three days at Dog Lake, and a short visit to Upper Cottonwood Lake brought back many great memories, in addition to a nice list of birds. Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge.

There’s a bear! There’s a bear!

Up to 100 kg – possibly a female, my guide and a bear researcher from the wildlife charity Callisto, Yannis Tsanakis, tells me. Birding Fallon: Well Worth the Trip

One of the highlights of the trip for me, and for some of the other media folks being hosted by the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority, was a kayak tour of Tule Lake in the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge. Yellow-headed Blackbirds singing in the reeds allowed us to get an arm’s length away.

Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. You may be happy to have a flock of chickadees visit your backyard, but it is difficult to ignore hundreds of American White Pelicans streaming by. Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge, North Dakota. In the case of these Tricolored Blackbirds , they are formed for DEFENSE.

A return visit to Summer Lake Refuge

The first stop, Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge in central Oregon is without a doubt one of the most important stop overs for migrating birds on the west coats, no matter the species. It was mixed in with the American White Pelican, in the photo above. Nearly every shallow water area a small group of Greater Yellowlegs.

The One and Only Outer Banks Big Day

Targets acquired, we piled into cars and headed south to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges, the jewel of the Outer Banks, where we were likely to cross paths with the vast majority of our species for the day. Though our focus was birds, there’s plenty of other wildlife on the islands. We set up scopes and started tallying.
