In the previous period I wrote mostly book reviews (but of some really great books ), yet I cannot remember when the last time was that I wrote of birding itself? Perhaps in my December posts on birding Colombian Amazonia ? Driving with open windows (to hear the birds) becomes unbearable and I am heading out of this fish farm.

Week 30: We return to Summer Lake

Imagine waking up to the call of thousands of ducks, geese, and every kind of marsh bird you can imagine. By the time we left, I had recorded one new Lifer, 12 New Year Birds, and a total of 76 species. As I walked along the trails, and water control dikes, I got to enjoy birds just about everywhere. Now that is a first.

Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge

These younger rams were having a great time playing “king of the rock” So much for the history of the area, lets talk about the birds! With water, comes birds, so I set off in search. This is also one of the best birding hot spots on the mountain. A White-crowned Sparrow is always a beautiful subject!

Visitors on the Range

Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears. There are also rattlesnakes, amazing views, fascinating tales of history and prehistory, and of course, many birds. It’s hard to say.

Over the Mountain

But when you’re moving closer to great birding, there are some consolations. Almost immediately I was besieged by the songs of Yellow Warblers , Black-capped Chickadees , and Song Sparrows , all engaged in vigorous staking-out of territory. Things were quiet at first as I headed upwards, until I startled two Mule Deer.
