The snake was wrapped firmly around the hawk’s tail, neck, and wings, and had enough strength to immobilize the bird but not to kill him. The snake had no puncture wounds, and was released 24 hours later. Key West Wildlife Center takes mostly birds, but will rescue mammals, marine mammals, and both land and sea turtles as well.

She is a lifelong champion of all birds, and a hero and inspiration to me. Even as a veteran wildlife rehabilitator, I could scarcely believe the sight before me. In mammals, maggots eat only dead tissue and are occasionally used to debride wounds. If there is an entrance wound, there is an exit wound.

Wild bird rehabilitators want bird parents to feed their own babies. Putting a baby bird back in its nest is not always the right thing to do.

Years ago, I became a wildlife volunteer and advocate because of a cat who caught a bird. Back then, I didn’t know enough about birds, but I knew a lot about cats. I surprised her and she dropped the bird before vaporizing again. That was my first trip to California Wildlife Center. I was mortified.
