It is an adherent to fresh water lakes, canals and swamps from India through East Asia, Indonesia and New Guinea. The classic bittern habit of freezing when alarmed with its bill raised can be seen in this species, though it allows very close approach or flushes if you get too close without seeing it.

When not climbing, he collected species, and thus a number of birds are named after him. Three of them can be found on Mount Kinabalu, and local bird guides speak admiringly of colleagues who have seen all three of them on one day (we only managed two). This isn’t just because roses smell nice (although many do) or even because we need to remember that almost all birds depend in one way or another on plants (although they mostly do). Frankly, Ho Chi Minh City is not a place you would go to specifically for birding. But if you are there anyway (at the start of a longer birding trip) and have an afternoon to spare, then why not? This indicates that the bird is aware of where the predator is looking. eBird states that there are nearly 50 of them.

I did not find much about this bird online except for a paper with the exciting title “A new quill mite Torotrogla emberizae sp. In contrast, the females need to make sure not to get duped into raising actual cuckoos – the buntings are a targeted host species ( source ).
