The poster bird of this area is the near-threatened Black-necked Crane. Godlewski’s Bunting is an attractive bunting species with a rather broad distribution in Russia, Mongolia, China, and other countries. Not sure how I (or the bird itself) feel about the bird being named after a bird collector, though.

Primorye is officially part of Russia’s Far Eastern Federal District. How when he needed a dissertation topic in 2005 (studying at the University of Minnesota), it was either Hooded Crane or Blakiston’s Fish Owl, both iconic birds of the area. He wanted to do research that would have a conservation impact.

Out of just under 200 bird species I observed this year in SE Europe, there are 6 threatened species. Some of them were always uncommon in the region, others are highly localised, some are hard to notice among thousands of similar birds, but others were abundant recently and one of them still is, despite the decrease in numbers.
