And as much as I’d love to feature once again some colorful spring migrants this week at Birds and Booze, the fact is I haven’t had much luck locating any – well, on cans and bottles of booze, that is. A year ago, we presented a barleywine, a very strong beer, as a stand-in for the traditional Champagne in our New Year’s Eve edition of Birds and Booze. And a year later, we find ourselves in the same situation: it seems impossible to find a bottle of sparkling wine fit for New Year’s Eve with a bird on the label.

This just might be a birding joke as old as the hills, but it’s one I hear without fail every year come Christmas Bird Count season in upstate New York. Dad-level bird jokes are right at home at Christmas Bird Count compilation dinners. Good Christmas Bird Counting and happy drinking! I suspect it’s quite possible.

Some time after the Spanish encounter with the Turkey, birds were brought back to Europe where they were raised and became an important source of food and fancy feathers. They became known as “Turkie Fowl” (spelling varies) because they were coming from the general direction of Turkey. This is where they got their name.

I’ve been dragging my feet on wine reviews here at Booze and Birds for quite some time. Not that I haven’t been searching: by now I have a good backlog of bird-bedecked bottles that I’ve picked up over the last few months, just waiting for the right moment to uncork. This is a bird deserving respect.
