Birding Shanghai in May 2023 – Part 1

May is a busy month for birds migrating through Shanghai – and of course, last May was completely missed due to the lockdown. So, I spent a lot of time birding this month, and to keep this post at a manageable length, it mostly only covers the first half of May. The video is notable for the bird basically refusing to move at all.

There is a wonderful site called UAE Birding , that makes a great reference once you have decided how much time you have to spare and it carries a list of part-time guides who may be able to show you around. Families spend their quality time together on Thursday evenings and Fridays, so parks and open spaces become very busy.

The reason the location is remaining undisclosed is that reliable Mangrove Cuckoos are difficult to find in the American Birding Association area and are a very sought after species. The Kerkini Lake, Greece: Dipped One, Got One

I dipped a bird recently – possibly a lifer. First I noticed a red cap – a male, then striped flanks and pale-red undertail, but couldn’t see its wing because some part of the bird remained hidden by a branch at any given time. I opt for the bird richest section of the lake, visible from the eastern dyke. What to say?
