The Cerro de Punhuato (poon-WA-toe) nature reserve, officially denominated a biological garden, is right on the northeastern edge of Morelia’s urban zone. This reserve, and that of the Filtros Viejos canyon, are the best options for the birding tourist who chooses to visit our city without traveling farther afield.

Last year, I compiled a subjective list of the Top 25 National Wildlife Refuges for Birding. I recently traveled to Texas and made a trip to Hagerman NWR (an “Honorable Mention”), which is north of Dallas. In many ways, Hagerman NWR is similar to other well-known birding refuges. Of course, excellent opportunity to go birding with my friends Brad and Laura. My colleague Doug wrote me an email describing the whereabouts of these “rosy finches” and my wife had to manage my excitement with horse tranquilizer… What a fantastic little birds. This is a simple grey and black bird but I have always wanted to see one.

If you are like me, you can get a fair amount of birding done while traveling with your non-birder spouse… as long as you make sure you visit places with lots of other interesting activities, to keep that spouse happy. But I really want you to come bird Morelia. This is not the best birding decision. to be exact).

I got back into birding less than a decade ago, long after moving to Mexico in 1983. So I can hardly speak with authority on birding in the U.S. A quick study as I researched this post revealed that fully 37 Arizonan “specialties” are common birds right here where I live.

I was flummoxed during a recent trip to Dallas as my company had changed our hotel and I had no idea where I was. The hotel was on Midway Road in Dallas, with no eBird hotspots easily reachable on foot or by public transport, so I wandered south towards the 635. He waited outside the nest for a few moments.

We did however gain an extra night, at our expense in Miami, Florida, all of which was in the dark, so I could not even run out and put a couple of birds on a Florida State List. Our first stop was the Lakeview Drive Ponds, Corey’s primary birding location when he and his family visited the island a few years ago.
