The next day I found out that about 750 km / 470 mi north from here, in Prague, capital city of the Czech Republic, Ivan Miksik, one of the most active Czech ringers sent this message in January, two years ago.

Yellowhammer Dialect Project

Most birds at a locality sing only one dialect, which seems locally stable over years. A similar citizen science project in the Czech Republic was a huge success. Yellowhammer is a widespread, small and conspicuous songbird that ideal for studying functions of dialects in animal vocal communication. Can it work?

This is the Czech Republic entry for 2009; [link]. Tonight, Malmo hosts the high camp drama that is the Eurovision Song Contest. It is a celebration of trite, ridiculous and frankly disturbing pop music. Titles of previous winning songs have included; “Ding-a Dong”, “Boom Bang-a-bang”, “La La La”, “Diggi-Loo Diggy-Lay”.

My Year in Birding 2012

Two-thousand-twelve was a pretty darn good year for me birding-wise and otherwise. Seeing 525 species was nice, as was the fact that I birded in four countries, nine of the fifty states in the United States, and fifty-one counties.
