Sometimes it can be disappointing when the area has changed due to development and other times you can find some unlikely birds. As with anywhere in Singapore, it is easy to access by public transport.

ARUBA — Of all the places that I’ve had the privilege to bird, Aruba is probably has the poorest birding coverage. None of the things that really lend themselves to high bird diversity. It’s a good bird, but there are a small handful of other records. For starters, it’s small. And really windy.

We have just returned from an incredible three weeks in Singapore, where unlike many others who visit the country we spent the whole time in nature parks, forests and gardens observing birds. The only shopping we did was to buy fresh fruit and some Asian snacks for while we were out all day hiking and birding.

We didn’t know what to expect from the train that had at one time been used to transport bananas to the coast and is now used to transport ecotourists to the wildlife refuge. It was expertly driven and we saw some cool birds en route, for the best of which the driver was kind enough to stop.

Before we left home to go camping and birding in the northern area of the Kimberley we had a plan that once we got as far north as the Northern Territory we would return to Halls Creek, Western Australia, via the Duncan Road. The waterbody was not huge, but it contained freshwater crocodiles and a variety of bird-life in the area.
