The birders birding on a budget and doing a lower-48 big year, Renee Rubin and Michael Delesantro , are doing nicely at 614 species for the year, amazing considering how little money they have spent. Not only that, but they are doing their big year to raise money for the Houston Audubon Society and the Katy Prairie Conservancy.

The young birds had looked like they were ready to fledge, the season is getting late and they looked ready to leave. I half-heartedly searched the opposite side for the fledged birds and turned to climb back out. As I walked along the ocean’s edge I looked ahead with my bins to see if any birds worked the shoreline.

A new Australian Big Year Record was set by John Weigel, who did his big year to raise money for Tasmanian Devil conservation. The birders who birded on a budget and did a Lower-48 Big Year, Renee Rubin and Michael Delesantro , managed to track down 654 species, amazing considering how little money they have spent.
