Conservationists at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) have been using remote controlled drones to watch the nests of endangered breeds and monitor the progress of reintroduced species. There are also numerous videos of strikes from territorial birds, that while vindicating are also worrisome.

The field site I am assigned to is located in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and home to a particularly rich avifauna that numbers well over 500 species. Hundreds of riotously colored birds representing 14 species of macaws and parrots flock and frolic together in less than fifty meters of forest canopy.

And, to give his dream year a little more oomph, he created a grand once-in-a-lifetime goal: to track down and see every pitta species in the world in one year. Some of his finds are the first documented records of the bird in that area or the first decent photograph of a little-known species. And sun bears. And mosquitos.

Informed literature bears out my experience that most birds are seen singly or in pairs. Very interesting species. The former British colony’s Z.c. melli strain is one of as many as 12 races and shows a lighter face than many of the others. Married to a Canon? That I understand! They are most visible on the napes of passerines.
