One of the admirable things about Montana is how it contains prime examples of not one, but two iconic North American landscapes. But eastern Montana contains the equally though differently stunning high plains, a world unto itself with very different wildlife meeting very different challenges.

Analysis : I have never seen a Kirtland’s Warbler, but this is consistent with the research I have done to fix that problem. We stayed at the Yellow Bay Biological Research Station, a cozy collection of buildings located, logically enough, on a slope overlooking a bay lined with yellow sandstone on the eastern shore of the lake. Though the climate of the area is described as mild, this needs to be understood in Montana terms.
