But I would never have imagined how important it would be to my emotional well-being to have a bird-friendly garden during lockdown. It doesn’t seem to offer food or shelter for birds; but, being the tallest tree on the block, is an important stopover for lots of species. And it bears for more than half the year!

And, to give his dream year a little more oomph, he created a grand once-in-a-lifetime goal: to track down and see every pitta species in the world in one year. Some of his finds are the first documented records of the bird in that area or the first decent photograph of a little-known species. And sun bears. And mosquitos.

She doesn’t know the species till it emerges, almost dreamlike, from the heavy glare of the sun. Though the coast of British Columbia, a part of the Great Bear Rainforest, was rich in both, it was appallingly deficient in scientific data. Fox encounters 69 species, some singly, some in huge feeding or migrating flocks.

I sat for long hours along the road or on a mountain track, using my paint brushes and ink to catch the deep emotion and essence of those mountains, like in a Shanshui painting.
