This past Saturday, 10 October, was my favorite birding event of the year. Yes, it was the Queens County Bird Club Big Sit, our seventh iteration of the sedentary birding classic. It is a birding challenge where a team of birders stays in one spot for the entire day to see how many species they can record for their location.

Anytime I travel, I do what it takes to get in some birding. After all, the best way to find new birds is to look in new places. This past Saturday, 09 October 2021, was the Eighth Annual Queens County Bird Club Big Sit. As regular readers of 10,000 Birds know, the Big Sit is my favorite birding event of the year, narrowly edging out the Christmas Bird Count. It’s lonely in the dark with no birds to keep you company.

Therefore, I am jumping at every opportunity to explore a new area, and subsequent birds that might be there. My wife and I have had our boat up in that area many times, and I knew that there would be a good shot to add a few new birds from the far northwest end of the US. Here is one of them standing in the kelp.

I had high hopes for the 5th Annual Queens County Bird Club Big Sit this past Saturday at Fort Tilden. We had persevered through four years at the top of Battery Harris Platform and could bring our experience to bear on the task of trying to record as many species as possible on a single day from that single spot.

Out east on Long Island you can find what is arguably the most productive inlet in coastal New York in terms of birding.* The jetty-lined Shinnecock Inlet seems to be a magnet for marvelous birds which makes it, of course, a magnet for birders as well. “Ipswich” Savannah Sparrow Passerculus sandwichensis princeps.
