Keep birding and you might see a White-tailed Kite hovering as it hunts rodents and one of the few Bat Falcons in the Valley might dash into view. Lesser numbers of other common birds also occur; birds like the Gray-crowned Yellowthroat , Inca Doves , saltators, Groove-billed Anis , and other species.

But the jawbone…that was from a bat! Oehlenschlager apologized that he couldn’t say the exact species of bat. It was either a big brown bat or a hoary bat. Oehlenschlager said that because two teeth were missing, he couldn’t give a positive id on the bat.

Later, Harry Fuller, President of the Klamath Bird Observatory, led us to an open meadow where we saw a pair of Great Gray Owls hunting in a meadow. the scene where Jochen’s saw his BBOTY – a Bat Hawk. This spectacular montane vulture reminds me more of a giant falcon as it cleaves the air on long wings.

They are traditionally pastoral people, but have from necessity accepted agriculture, fishing and crocodile hunting as means of survival. We finally arrived at a high bend on the Omo River where a Karo village was perched. As the sky turned rosy with dawn, we stopped for some excellent additions to our burgeoning bird list.

Of course, various species of bats as well. At night, we keep our eyes out for the passage of the neighborhood Barn Owl , oftentimes a Tropical Screech-Owl would hunt insects from a low perch on our almond tree. Sometimes this Merlin ‘s mate comes to check him out, but for most of the northern winter he hunts solo.

Orange-breasted Falcon : Since there aren’t any specimens of this regal neotropical Falco from Costa Rica, we actually aren’t even sure if it used to live here. Hope for a vagrant comes in the form of an Orange-breasted Falcon sighting from west-central Panama.

Once we were checked in, we headed straight out to begin our hunt. What did find right off the bat, was an amazing group of people, all willing to help out in so many ways. Aplomado Falcon. Alamo is, for what we could ascertain, just about dead center of a huge number of high quality birding hotspots. Tom and Connie, and John Y.
