I remember leaping off the couch escaping whatever mundane conversation to run outside, eyes peering as far as possible into the night sky in an attempt to locate the Barn Owl whose shriek I had just heard. Decades later, a Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl spent several days at our home during lockdown times. Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl.

As we humans are animals, like birds are, it often seems to make more sense to me to assume that their and our drivers are similar, not different. Of course, we humans tend to give slightly elevated terms to our motives – but that does not generally mean that they are really different from those of other animals.

I have been thinking about this for awhile after I saw some people online with things like a pet skunk and even someone with a barn owl. However, the same people with these ducks, owls, armadillos, skunks, raccoons, etc are always showing clips of them with their little guys and they are just so happy, the animal and the owner.

We might have a few small farms nearby and the gift of a narrow riparian zone out back but in general, the main habitat is that of the modern human kind; housing and streets (lamposts included). Bird at night and those same grassy fields could host Striped and Barn Owls. Listen for the subtle notes of Tropical Screech Owl.

The crows are not friendly to humans, although they sometimes make an exception for the person who raised them. The nighttime version of this occurred at Louise Shimmel’s Cascades Raptor Center in Oregon, when her education director took their Barn Owl to the flight cage for some exercise.
