What is the State Bird of Maryland?

We’re birding in the summertime, when a beautiful whistling calls catches our attention. Suddenly, we catch a flash of bright orange: a Baltimore Oriole. Baltimore Orioles spend their winters in Florida, Central, and South America, and migrate north to breed in much of the Eastern United States. We all know the feeling.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of August 2011)

Would you believe my best bird of the weekend was a Screaming Piha ? but my best bird of the weekend was in Baltimore, specifically the Aquarium. The Baltimore Aquarium boasts, among its many phenomenal attractions, a tiny but terrific rainforest populated by some outstanding birds. How do you like six (!)

Bird Migration and Conservation Meet at Selva Bananito, Costa Rica

Birds begin to filter down through this southern part of Central America by August but the biggest avian movement happens during the third and final weeks of October. Most of them fly on the Caribbean side, especially along the coast south of Limon, and that’s why I guided the Birding Club of Costa Rica down that way this past weekend.
