The press material says it covers over 800 species, so you know I had to do a count.

It has entertaining stories, includes animals people care about because they like them (and also addresses that concept), and it describes how the numbers of various species decreased to the point of being classified as "endangered" or worse. It's a great primer on extinction and conservation for the layperson.

The year list ends on a provisional 1803 species from 1608 checklists submitted by 12 beats from 16 countries. The life list got off to a great start in January with ticks from Hawaii and smashed through the 4000 mark by mid January after Corey visited Jamaica. And we did , for the Peregrine Falcon and Osprey , the Brown Pelican and Bald Eagle. A species, wiped off the earth, never to exist again. Extinction is what befalls the species that fails to adapt, to survive, to thrive. Most species go extinct. We could do it! Then the 80s happened. What a horror! What a wrong!
